The Staffordshire County Pool Association Festival of Pool was a roaring success at the weekend (19-20 January) with Welsh star Keith Jones and Warren Hodgeson taking the honours in the singles event and Plate..

Apart from the singles competition, there were also several matches involving the Welsh Team, the England Ladies side and the Staffordshire county sides.

The Staffordshire Men's A Team again showed why they are always among the favourites to win the National Inter-county Championships with a solid 24-20 victory over Wales. The Staffordshire B Team also got the better of a Wales side with a 23-21 victory, while the Staffordshire Ladies Team found the going harder against the England Ladies Team, who ran out 28-15 winners. There was also a flyer competition which was won by Warren Hodgson of Wales, who beat local lad Adam Davis 4-1 in the final.

The main singles event had a classy field with the likes of Lee Kendall, Gareth Potts, Phil Harrison, Tim Singh and Keith Jones all fighting for the first prize. So when the quarter-final stages arrived, it was no surprise to see all these names figuring prominently.

The first quarter-final saw Phil Harrison take on young Welsh talent Ryan John, who shared the first four frames of the match before the Cambridgeshire potter moved up a gear and won the next four frames to take the match 6-2.

The second quarter-final saw close friends and practice partners Lee Kendall and Gareth Potts battle for a place in the last four. The England captain went 2-0 up before the apprentice took the next three frames to go 3-2 in the lead. Potts then played some spell-binding pool to win 6-4 - Kendall has obviously taught him too well...

The third quarter-final saw Simon Yates take a 2-0 lead against Keith Jones before the Welsh disher responded with five frames on the bounce. Yates managed another frame to make it 3-5 but Jones took the match with the next for a 6-3 win.

The last quarter-final saw the dark horses for the event paired together - and it was Tim Singh who proved the stronger player with a confident 6-2 win against an out-of-sorts Burgess.

The semi-finals produced two superb matches. The first semi saw Tim Singh look like he was going to beat Keith Jones after going 2-0 up and then 3-2 up, but he could never really pull away and this high-class affair ended with Jones edging it 6-4 and booking his place in the final.

The second semi-final between Phil Harrison and Gareth Potts went all the way. Young Potts was playing superbly and forged into a 5-2 lead, before Harrison came back with the next three frames to make it 5-5. Harrison now looked the firm favourite, but it was Potts who took the deciding frame to book a final appearance.

The final was a classy affair with Gareth Potts taking the first two frames, before Keith Jones rallied and won the next four. Potts dished in the next to make it 3-4 but the flying Welshman ran the next two to win the final 6-3.
